I am obviously not going to write the entire chapter in here, but you can expect quotes from the chapter, definitely. So here we go!
A brief summary! The book starts out with the Dursley's and you see their opinions, and you also start to see things. People dressed differently, a mysterious cat, interesting news stories, and many owls. Then we find out that this is because of one event: Voldemort killing James and Lily Potter, but failing at killing Harry Potter, their little son. Dumbledore and McGonagall (the cat, an animagous [sp?]) discuss this. Hagrid brings Harry to them on Sirius's motorcycle, and Harry is left at the Dursley's with a letter explaining everything.
The beginning of this book seems lovely to me, every single time I read it. I just love everything about the beginning.
So I have something to say about the Dursley's. They are "perfectly normal, thank you very much." But does anyone, besides me, think they aren't really that normal? I don't know about you, but does a normal family force their own family members to sleep under the stairs? And they spoil Dudley, so much. He learned the word "won't" in this chapter. I know some children learn "no" at early ages, but won't? What kind of child speaks in contractions? Maybe they do, and I just haven't noticed before. But I think at this time he was two-ish, so it doesn't make much sense to me.
Now I have to quote the description about Dumbledore, because I have always loved this. Description is always something fun to read, for me at least, and so I just really like this one!
Nothing like this man had ever been seen on Privet Drive. He was tall, thin, and very old, judging by the silver of his hair and beard, which were both long enough to tuck into his belt. He was wearing long robes, a purple cloak that swept the ground, and high-heeled, buckled boots. His blues eyes were light, bright, and sparkling behind half-moon spectacles and his noses was very long and crooked, as though it had been broken at least twice. This man's name was Albus Dumbledore.I love how JK slipped the whole broken nose thing in here. It makes me wonder if she had his whole background story worked up when she was writing the very first chapter of Harry Potter. Knowing her, she probably did. There are things she mentions, like the crooked nose, or Sirius Black, in the very first chapter, that come back much later.
That is all I have to say about the first chapter! I don't know if this was that great of a blog about the chapter, but I am hoping it's at least mediocre! I've never blogged like this before, so it could be a journey for you and me. Hopefully I will be a fantastic blogger by the end of the seventh book. I know that epilogue is far away from this point... but we can do it!
Question: What is your favorite moment in the first chapter?
PS: I like to type in "I" because it's so fancy and slanted. The f's look really neat also. Just for fun, I am going to type the whole alphabet now!
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
(The last one was cooler, don't you think?)
No word count, again! Woah, you're going to blog about every, single chapter? For 7 books! That will take forever, you're whole blog for the day will be about HP. lol
ReplyDeleteYes, that's a good description of him, reminds me of the first dumbledore in the movies. No, they're normal, everyone else who is nice and lets their relatives live in spare bedrooms aren't. Although, really the Dursleys are normal, it's harry who isn't and they're afraid of that.
Oohh I liked when Dumbledore comes, and when all the ppl dressed in cloaks come and see Vernon. it's cool. yup yup
